The Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessel, the Lady Cory-Wright was a 2,500 ton merchant ship that was requisitioned by the Royal Navy in 1914. On March 26th, 1918, she left Plymouth for Malta laden depth charges, primers, torpedo detonators and  mines; a floating arsenal. She had not got far, only 14 miles south-west of the Lizard  in Cornwall, when she was torpedoed by the German submarine UC-17. An enormous explosion took place and she sank with the loss of all her crew except one man who was found clinging to a floating mine. James Cook was one of the crew who did not survive.
